What are mobile friendly websites?

A mobile friendly website is a ‘responsive’ website which has been optimised to resize content for display on different sized screens – usually smartphones and tablets.

Websites are now accessed from a wide range of devices – PC’s, laptops, tablets and smartphones. A responsive website is versatile and can ‘respond’ to any sized screen by adapting its content and display dimensions in order to provide an optimal, user friendly viewing & reading experience on any device.

Why do I need  a mobile friendly website?

- Firstly, 60% of all Google searches are now conducted on mobile devices. Smartphones and tablets are the fastest growing area of internet usage. In Ireland alone, internet usage on mobile devices increased by 67% in 2014 (source). Some countries already have a ‘mobile majority’ whereby over 50% of all webpage visits come from mobile devices. Mobile usage is no longer a growing trend, it is here to stay and by not having a mobile friendly website you could be missing out on half of your potential customers.

- Secondly, as of April 21st 2015, significant changes to Google Search Engines have begun to penalise the search ranking of websites which are not mobile-friendly. It is Google’s job to bring you information quickly, so Google’s search changes aim to promote and improve the ranking of websites which are mobile friendly. Websites which are not compatible with mobile devices or which take too long to render on a mobile device screen will have their search ranking demoted.
