Mobile communication

A new study from The University of London has found that tweeting from phones makes us more egocentric.

It’s a given that Twitter personalities differ from person to person, but what about from device to device?

A new study compares the nature of what and how we tweet from our phones versus other web platforms. The research served to answer questions regarding the egocentricity, feminine/masculine language, negative/positive sentiments and agentic/communal traits of tweets and whether they occur more from mobile phones compared to other website platforms.

Led by University of London, 235 million tweets were analysed over the course of six weeks in the summer of 2013.

Here’s what they said about egocentricity:

Ultimately, we found that mobile tweets are not only more egocentric in language than any other group, but that the ratio of egocentric to nonegocentric tweets is consistently greater for mobile tweets than from nonmobile sources.

Mobile tweets are around 2.5% more egocentric than non-mobile users on average, according to the study. Mobile tweets have more egocentric language at all times of the day. Across all platforms, tweets are at least egocentric in the late mornings, around 9 a.m. to 10 a.m, and then the egocentricity levels become more moderate during work hours. The study does note, however, that overall tweet volume is known to steadily increase throughout the day.

Though tweeting is not suppressed midday, our egocentricity is. When we are at work or school, we may focus more on activities that are communal or we may not have time to tweet. After school and after work hours, the focus seems to shift back to a more egocentric presentation of self.

Their findings on the other three questions?

We did not find that mobile tweets were particularly gendered. Regardless of platform, tweets tended to employ words traditionally associated as masculine. We did find that negative language is used more frequently by mobile users at any point in time, a finding that would benefit from further research. The ratio of negative to positive unigrams was also found to be consistently greater for mobile tweets than web tweets. Lastly, we did not find that mobile-based tweets are more agentic than web-based tweets. Rather, both platforms tended to employ language that was associated with communal behaviors.

Overall, a major argument the researchers hoped to make with this study was that the context of social media content matters. While previous scholarly work has studied Twitter data, not much has looked at the differences in how they’re produced.

–

New smartphone app ‘Peeple’ allows us to review each other.

Yelp for humans? You’re not far wrong…

We learned this week about an app called Peeple, where users can review other humans in the same way we review restaurants and hotels!

Needless to say, there’s plenty that could go wrong with this and in the period since it was first announced, the controversial app that promised to let users “review” other people and give them a rating out of five, has softened its offering just weeks before its planned launch.

The company had previously scheduled the launch of the new social app, dubbed “Yelp for people”, for November this year. The app promised users the ability to “revolutionise the way we’re seen in the world through our relationships”.

Users could assign a star rating and feedback to anyone they knew, positive or negative, and the ratee could do very little about it. Every negative review would have been live for at least 48 hours, and in order to remove them, an individual would be encouraged to contest a negative review, leading to accusations that the app would become a libellous quagmire and a harasser’s dream.

Following the criticism, Peeple’s website and social media feeds were blanked out, leading to speculation that the app was never going to see the light of day – or even that the whole thing was a hoax. But instead, it looks like it’s still on-track to launch, even earlier than expected: the new website gives a date of 12 October for the app’s release.

But according to the app’s developer, a former recruitment executive named Julia Cordray, the app that hit stores might be less controversial than what was previously announced: “You will NOT be on our platform without your explicit permission. There is no 48-hour waiting period to remove negative comments. There is no way to even make negative comments. Simply stated, if you don’t explicitly say ‘approve recommendation’, it will not be visible on our platform.”

The new direction leaves the app having more in common with purely positive ranking apps such as Klout and LinkedIn itself.

One of the major benefits of smaller digital devices like smartphones and now – smart watches!, is in the field of health and fitness apps.

Recognising that this is part of its appeal to consumers, Apple have teamed up with Nike to create a dedicated Apple Nike+ Running app specifically for iwatch. The responsive web design means that the app can be used on a number of apple devices, however it is optimized for display on iwatch.

Users of the responsive app will be able to track their time, distance covered, pace and heart rate, with all the relevant information conveniently located on their iwatch.

The responsive app will also connect with friends, who can even cheer you on during your run, as well as allowing you to listen to music wirelessly through Bluetooth-enabled headphones.

The Apple Watch has been available to pre-order in Ireland since April and will be released on general sale in July 2015.

Apple launch ‘Apple Music’

Apple today unveiled Apple Music – a smartphone app which aims to offer everything you love about music in one place.

That includes a mobile friendly website streaming service, and seperate smartphone app where you can listen to the millions of songs on iTunes library, a 24/7 online radio station called Beats 1 which broadcasts from LA, NYC, and London, and a place called Connect where musicians (even unsigned artists) can share demos, photos, videos, remixes, soundbites and much more. “This is going to be a very powerful place for musicians,” said Jimmy Iovine during the press launch. “This is a music ecosystem.”

Apple Music is immediately being pitched as a challenger to the Spotify service. Spotify have a 20 million smartphone user head-start, but Apple are armed with hundreds of millions of iphone users worldwide AND a song library which dwarfs Spotify and Google Play put together.

AppleMusic also offer curated playlists by respected musicians, making sure you’re always able to find something genuinely interesting.

The service will be launching worldwide later this June for $9.99 per month (Ireland price yet to be announced). An Android version is also due to be released later in the year.

Google are working on a smartphone app that can add up the calories in your food!

Last week, Google’s research scientist Kevin Murphy presented a new tool the company has been working on which will allow users to count the calories in your food using a mobile phone.

The artificial intelligence tool, currently called Im2Calories, works through a method called “deep learning”, which involves large amounts of data inputted into the mobile phone app that the system can crunch its way through to gradually make sense of what it’s “looking at”.

During the conference Murphy conducted a basic demonstration of how the system works by taking a smartphone image of two eggs, two pancakes, and three pieces of bacon. The mobile phone app uses the plate size to determine the size of the pieces of food, and in turn, uses that to count calories.

Counting your calories in this way would involve either scanning every piece of packaging or manually entering the weight of every item you’ve consumed, which can be pretty time-consuming. Im2Calories will simplify that process, making it much easier for people to keep track of their diets simply by using a smartphone to take a single photograph.

The new technology could have other applications in the design of website and mobile friendly website design.

The product isn’t available yet, and it hasn’t been confirmed that it ever will be!, but it’s still interesting to see what Google is working on.

Mobile trends – Microsoft set to introduce vulgar emoji’s in their next Windows 10 update.

So far, tech giants like Apple and Google have refrained from introducing any “overly vulgar” icons to their set of mobile phone emoji’s. However, Emoji pedia has recently reported that Microsoft will be introducing a “Reversed Hand With Middle Finger Extended” emoji with the planned July update of Windows 10…!

The company that standardises emojis – Unicode Consortium – made the middle finger symbol available a long time ago, but no major company has adopted it – until now.

So, if you ever feel like sending someone a simple ‘to-the-point’ message, now you can! If you’re using Windows 10…

We’re not sure how ‘mobile friendly’ this item is, but it’s certainly an indictment of how regularly we use our mobile phones…

If you’re fed up with constant alerts and website notifications on your smartphone but don’t want to be entirely disconnected, this simple new “Light Phone” might be the thing for you. Designed to be as small and as thin as a credit card, the phone weighs just 38.5 grams and is only able to make and receive phone calls. It can store 10 key numbers for speed dial and has an incredible battery life of 20 days.

The beautifully designed device was created by product designer Kaiwei Tang through the Google “30 Weeks” incubator scheme and is currently available to pre-order one for $100 USD.
